THEMUSEUM

Filming the videos at THEMUSEUM (formerly known as The Children’s Museum) was an absolute blast! Before starting KW SVO, I always had this huge misconception that volunteering was dull and sometimes depressing. However, every organisation I visit, I’m constantly proved wrong and THEMUSEUM was no exception! This time, I also brought a couple of friends along with me to take pictures and film. They really improved the quality of the videos, so I send out a huge thank you to Luke and Anthony!

THEMUSEUM is located in downtown Kitchener and has plenty of fun and educational opportunities for students. Volunteers can expect to work with a diverse range of kids, as well as adults, and they will get to spend a lot of time around the current exhibits. THEMUSEUM’s first two floors always have the same exhibits, while the two exhibits on the upper two floors change.

Student volunteers are encouraged to volunteer at least three hours a week, but there is no minimum monthly commitment. During the school year, you will most likely be volunteering on the weekends. Training for new volunteers happens mostly on the job. New volunteers will arrive for their first shift a little bit early, do some easy paper work, get a tour of the facilities, and be told the expectations. They will receive any specific training, and then be thrown right into their first shift. Nothing to be scared of though - there are always interpreters on the floor with you. So if you have any questions, help is never far away!

It is rare that students can volunteer in groups, but all volunteers will meet plenty of nice, new people. Volunteers should be good at working with other people and should have good customer service. Any interest in the arts and technology would be helpful because THEMUSEUM’s specialty lies in those fields.

To apply to become a volunteer, you may click here and the link will take you to THEMUSEUM’s volunteer application. Fill out all of the fields and click “Apply” at the bottom to submit your information. The volunteer coordinator, Andrea, will process your application and then contact you to set up an interview.

Student Volunteer Opportunities at THEMUSEUM
- Camp Volunteer – THEMUSEUM runs day camps during the summer, winter break and March break. Volunteers can get a lot of hours when helping out with a day camp. They must work with kids, by teaching crafts, singing songs, playing games, etc.
- Exhibit Guide – your opportunity to be a tour guide at THEMUSEUM. Work with museum interpreters to interact with visitors, show them how certain exhibits work and answer any questions.
- Gallery Attendant – be an exhibit guide for a gallery at THEMUSEUM. Greet guests and give tours of a specific gallery.
- “Special Exhibits” – exhibits come and go to THEMUSEUM, and certain ones require the special knowledge or specialized skills of volunteers. For example, there is an exhibit at THEMUSEUM now, “Treasures of China”, that is looking for bilingual volunteers who can speak English as well as a Chinese dialect.
